Remember you are probably NOT mentally ill – just stuck and frustrated!
By asking the right questions when seeking help.
Like – How long are your sessions? Is this person in the therapy business or do they care about you?
What makes the biggest difference in how fast you move toward feeling you are progressing is how warm a therapists is and not many degrees or how many years they have been praticing. It is what therapy calls the patient/therapist relationship!
What do we mean by ‘relationship’?
To get a sense of your feelings about a therapist you have to spend a little time on an initial call. Then trust your feelings. Why? Because people don’t know enough about psychotherapy to evaluate a therapist’s biography. It turns out that more years, more degrees, more….doesn’t make much difference. Ironically…clients believe they have only that to go by. You will have to use your heart and soul, your feelings and intuition – and if you don’t trust those aspects of yourself it is the time to begin by trusting them.
Generally the therapists who do both research and teaching, not just having a practice, are more up-to-date when it comes to new approaches – but even that doesn’t necessary mean they are good with clients.
Remember….a phone call of 5-10 minutes…listening to the therapist and asking a few questions is the best way to see who you feel comfortable with them. Don’t feel obliged to say yes to anyone. Intuitively you will know whether or not the therapist cares about their clients more or their own qualifications. And make sure you speak to at least 3-4 therapists – therapy is very personal and could really help you if you find the right fit.
CARING is the magic word. Many therapists care more about having letters after their name, and what they published, than caring about the clients themselves.
